Charles Rowland works in various media, including watercolor, gouache and acrylic. He has lived in the Columbus, Ohio area since 1970 and currently resides in southern Delaware County
A watercolor artist for over 25 years he is both an active artist and teacher. His work has won many awards in Ohio area exhibitions and can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the Midwest, West and southern United States. His work is represented by The North Main Gallery, Mount Vernon, Ohio, The Blue Cottage Gallery, Put-in Bay, Ohio, The Jodie McCallum Gallery in Marblehead, Ohio, The Terra Gallery, Columbus, Ohio and various exhibitions around the state. He is past President of the Worthington Area Art League, a signature member and secretary of the Ohio Watercolor Society, Central Ohio Watercolor Society, and the Worthington, Ohio and Westerville, Ohio Art Leagues.
He was featured in the February/March 2004 article “Master Painters of the USA” in International Artist Magazine.
His work is characterized by strong design and a solid approach to the technical fundamentals of the medium. While avoiding photorealism, his painting style captures the essence and emotion of the subject while involving the viewers’ imagination in its’ interpretation. The choice of subject matter is diverse ranging from seascapes and landscapes to still lifes and portraits. An avid sailor, his work is often based on nautical themes which frequently are taken from his Great Lakes and Chesapeake sailing experiences.

Fall Watercolor classes will start September 15 at the Westerville Community Center. There will be two six week sessions, Sept. 15-Oct, 20 and Nov. 3-Dec. 8.  n each session there will be a morning class and a different evening class. Below is a summary of the classes from the Westerville Community Center Fall brochure. Registration can be done at the center or on line. If you have watercolor supplies, just bring what you have to the first class.

Introduction to Watercolor
Techniques

We’ll begin by working on the basic
watercolor painting techniques and practice
applying those to simple paintings. This
class will include lots of demos, individual
assistance and learning by painting along

own photos. All levels of experience are
welcome.

Watercolor Techniques of
Landscapes and Seascapes

Learn the techniques used to paint realistic
representations of the elements found in
landscapes and seascapes. In each class
we will focus on one of the elements with
lots of demos, individual assistance and
learning by painting along with the instructor.
Each day we will do a different painting.

provided or bring your own photos. All levels
of experience are welcome. Approximate

Building Watercolor Skills

This class builds on the basic watercolor
skills to give your paintings a more finished
and professional look. We will explore
glazing, the use of hard and soft and lost
and found edges, brushwork techniques,
and a variety of other methods to pull your
paintings together. There will be instructor
demonstrations and hands on time to
develop your skills. This class will benefit
anyone who has basic watercolor experience
and wants to move to the next level.

Painting from Photos
