Worthington Market Day, Saturday, September 25, is almost here. Market Day is always a great opportunity to expose the community to WAAL and the varied talents of its members. Make plans now to display your art and volunteer at the WAAL booth! Because of limited display space, hanging pieces or 3D pieces for table display are limited to 3/member. Members are encouraged to also bring matted pieces (with display boxes), note cards, or other small art pieces (jewelry, etc.). Clearly label all pieces with price and artist’s name. For the event to be successful, we need your participation and help: Volunteers to work the booth are needed in one or two hour shifts from 9:00 am- 4:30 pm.Set up volunteers needed from 7:00 am - 9:00 am. Take down volunteers needed from 4:30 - 6:00 pm.To participate and/or help, contact Ron Porta at 436-1957 or <rporta@columbus.rr.com>. Let’s make this year’s Market Day a big success!

Charile Rowland recently was one of three jurors for an exhibit by OPRS (Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services). The 13 award winners will be featured on a calendar that they publish and distribute 11,000 copies worldwide. One of the winners was Tenny Williams!

Just to remind the Membership that we now have FIVE venues to exhibit our work. These are available to all dues-paying WAAL members on a first-come, first-serve basis. Sites become available on the first of each month, and our work can hang for a month (or longer, depending on demand). We will each be responsible for hanging our own work and taking it down, and for any and all publicity. Three of the choice sites—till recently available only through juried competition by the MAC--are now available without any jurying whatsoever! You need only contact me, and together we will decide on a month that is available and convenient. Each site has the appropriate hardware for hanging our pictures.

1. WORTHINGTON RECREATION CENTER. A choice location that can easily accommodate a dozen two-dimensional works, depending on size.

2. WORTHINGTON MUNICIPAL BUILDING. From a dozen to 20+ 2-D works, as the second-floor hall area is also available for hanging.

3. PARK NATIONAL BANK. A half-dozen 2-D works.

4. GUERNSEY BANK. A glass case accommodates four 16x20 2-D works, plus two or three 8x10s. Appropriate for small sculptures, ceramics, etc.

5. MARKET MORTAGE. A splendid large wall that can easily accommodate a dozen 2-D works.

You may partner with one or more WAAL members for any exhibit. In my experience, the staff of these venues is helpful and friendly, and will gladly answer our questions—about, e.g., whether three-dimensional works can be displayed. They seem genuinely delighted to display our work, and express concern if their walls go bare for even a day! For WAAL Members ONLY, s’il vous plait! No Exceptiions!!

A new film has been produced, ART IS LIFE IS ART, featuring the life and works of Don Jones. It was produced by Dr. Bruce Moon former Director of the Harding Hospital's Art Therapy Clinical Training Program, assisted by Karen Rush Jones, of WAAL who provided the history, the photography and technical support. Dr. Moon, presently Director of clinical education in Art Therapy at Mt. Mary College in Milwaukee, Ws. while on an educational-teaching tour, e-mailed Don from China, " Don, I showed the video film at Hong Cong University this morning. It got a standing ovation. . . unusual for these fairly reserved folks . . . Don Jones is a hit in HK. . .(ha!) the world premier went well. . . off to Taiwan for more of same stuff. love, Bruce."  Don is participating in a grant from the Columbus Foundation to do expressive art with the teens in some of the Franklin Co. group homes.

Charles Rowland is conducting a watercolor workshop for the Port Clinton Art Club, Port Clinton, Ohio on September 18, 2010. The one day Saturday workshop is titled Keys to Better Paintings - Five Simple Secrets of the Pros, and will address tips and techniques to immediately bring life and vibrancy to your work. Lots of demos, painting time and personal instruction. The workshop is open to non PC Art Club members. Contact Naomi Akins klakins@thirdplanet.net if you are interested in attending. If you often say "I need to loosen up" this is the workshop for you!

Pump House Guys at Wheeling , W. Va.
Charles Rowland, Jim DeVore, Don Dodrill and Ned Moore are having an exhibit at the Artworks Around Town Gallery in Wheeling, West Virginia. The exhibit will open with a Gallery Hop and Reception on September 2, 2010 from 5:30 - 8:00pm at the gallery, located at 2200 Market Street at Center Market, Wheeling, W.Va. The exhibit is hosted by OWS member Marilyn Phillis, who is an exhibiting member of the gallery.

Paul Graham news:
1) I have three black & white photos in the Ohio State Fair (Professional Division).
2) I have one sepia tone photo that was juried into a national show at the Xavier University Art Gallery in Cincinnati (8/27-9/25).
3) I was asked by the Columbus Aids Task Force to donate a piece (color photo) to their Art For Life Benefit Auction; that event is 9/25.
4) The show I've done here at Griswold ('08) and at the Marysvilled Library ('09) of my father's WWII photos ("Photographs of Occupied Japan") will hang in Sept. and Oct. at the Ross County Historical Museum in Chillicothe. My father is a Ross County native and still lives near Chillicothe, so this is pretty exciting for my family.

Chuck Zelms has a small (17) exhibit at the Worthington Municipal Building now through the end of August.
It's basically a subset of the exhibit at Motorists and focuses on flowers.

Congratulations!Ernest Lockridge's unPhotoshopped photograph, "HOMELESS," won FIRST PLACE in the High Road Gallery's Exhibit, "DOUBLE TAKE: An Uncommon View of Common Things," July 4, 2010. Judge Tom Hubbard wrote of Ernest's photograph: "Real, actual, contrasting the ideal aspirations of advertising with the truth of the street. Honest photo."

Three WAAL members were accepted in the Ohio Watercolor Society Annual Exhibit, Watercolor Ohio 2010 Those whose paintings will appear in the show at the Canton Museum of Art are Charles Rowland, Gloria Woods, and Dennis Zimmerman. The exhibit will open Saturday, September 4, 2010 with a reception from 2-5 pm at the Museum.
A total of 276 entries were submitted for the exhibit and 77 were selected for the show by juror John Salminen. Salminen will present a prograqm at the Canton Museum on Sunday, July 11, which is free and open to the public.

Tired of the heat and humidity? Want to brush up on your drawing technique? Join us at the light-filled, air conditioned Griswold Center for on going Tuesday morning FIGURE DRAWING/SKETCHING sessions (8:30 to 11 a.m). Since there are no fees or models, we take turns posing (clothes on - this is the Griswold, after all) for a maximum of 50 minutes - short gesture poses leading up to a 15 or 20-minute long pose. No photographs without prior consent; cameras can be intimidating. And If you find yourself coming back on a regular basis, please consider joining the Griswold. They are providing this free space (the Topping room on the second floor). Annual memberships to the Griswold run $10 - $15. Questions? Stop by on Tuesday. Bring along your pencils, charcoal, paper, etc. All levels welcome. Bob Davitian

There is currently an exhibit of 20 Oil and Pastel Paintings by Bill Westerman in the 2nd floor gallery of the Worthington Municipal Building at 6550 North High Street in Worthington. You are welcome to visit the exhibit at your leisure.

We have a 'summer special' going. Is anyone interested in gaining fame and possibly fortune? You can do this by setting up an art display at GUERNSEY BANK for the summer months. We need one person for June/July, and the August/September slot can be filled by one person who can leave their works on display for 2 months - possibly

Renate Flacker was commissioned to create a life-size Brutus. The finished bronze will find a permanent home inside the Student Union at OSU. Joe Waggenhals was privileged to take photos of the casting and assembly  process. This is a very interesting and insightful glimpse into the making of this sculpture. To show just a couple images would not convey the magnitude of this under taking. OPEN STUDIO  Beginning January 9th 2010 we will be having an OPEN STUDIO PAINTING OPPORTUNITY for our artists at the McConnell Art Center. We will start at 10 am and paint until Noon. Open Studio is defined as artists working on their own painting project. Bring your own easel, drop cloth and equipment. There will be a charge payable to the MAC. They are assessing a fee of $50 for the use of the room for 2 hours. We will divide that cost by the number of artists that take part each week. So you can see that if we have 15 artists the cost will be less than $4 per artist for the 2 hours. Chuck Zelms has a 40-piece photographic exhibit at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources headquarters now through the end of January. In keeping with the "theme" of the organization, the images are from Ohio and are "natural resources". Some of the images you've possibly seen before but others will be new to your eyes. You can stop by and visit Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Get your visitor pass upon entry and don't forget to return it on the way out.

Jan Allmon: The Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus will host the Ohio Star Ball Championships Nov. 17 through 22. In celebration of this event, I have painted three large scale oil paintings. Ann Kramer had a painting juried into the National Oil and Acrylic Society’s annual “Best of America” 2009 Exhibition in August, and it has won an “Award for Excellence” from Dick Blick Arts. She is a Signature Artist of that society. She is currently represented by Mac Worthington Gallery.

ATTENTION ARTISTS
During the months of October, November, and December there will be an OPEN STUDIO OPPORTUNITY for you to participate in. We will start the sessions Tuesday October 6 at 8 am and continue through to the end of December.
You need only to register with the Griswold and pay the annual $10 fee.
The sessions will be similar to last fall. You can paint in the media of your choice.
This will provide us with a space for studio painting and camaraderie with other artists during the cool or cold months.
We will have an informal critique at the conclusion of each 3 hour session if you choose.

Additionally we have been promised OPEN STUDIO SPACE in the new art center ( McConnell Art Center ) after the first of the year. The days of the week and times have yet to be established.

Joan Zeller has 3 pieces in the professional division at the State Fair, a show opening this Friday at Art Access in Bexley, a show of lamps opening at The Lamp Shade in the Short North for the August Gallery Hop (August 1), a sculpture that will be installed across the street from Haiku for the 2nd annual Art Al Fresco in the Short North on August 15, a show of my students art work called "Worthington's Emerging Artists" on Friday, August 21 at the Candle Lab in Old Worthington.

Ray Wilson will have a show at Motorist downtown Columbus July 18 - August 12.

Charlie Rowland, Jim Glover and Rich Clem will have several pieces of work on display at the Terra Gallery during the July Gallery Hop July 4.

Jan Allmon will be participating in the inaugural Granville Art Affair on Sunday, June 14 from 11 am to 6pm on the Great Lawn at the Bryn Du Mansion. In addition to the opportunity to see the work of over sixty juried fine artists and craft artists, there will be demonstrations, live entertainment and a polo match as part of the free admission event. The Bryn Du Mansion is 25 miles east of Columbus off route 16.

Paul Graham - The Ohio Art League asked me if I wanted to do a small solo show at Camelot Cellars Winery in the Short North, so of course I said 'yes'. I'm calling the show "Eclectica -- Old and New"; it's an eclectic blend of old and new work. Tenny Williams just hung an exhibit in the connector hall between the Westminster and Thurber Towers - the Westminster-Thurber art space - 645 Neil Ave. The subject is "Central Ohio Jazz Artists." He has tried to tell a story of the role of the portraited folks in the evolution of central Ohio jazz - folks who left a legacy; the two nationally respected big bands; the role of smaller groups and of "Jam Sessions" in giving performance opportunities to good musicians who. for whatever reason have not become part of regular performing groups; and young performers who guarantee the survival of jazz. The exhibit will be up all of March and April.

Kimono exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art? If not, do not miss it. “The Pentagon-sponsored Air Force Art Program held a dinner at the Bolling AFB Club Friday evening, October 24, to accept artwork donated to the USAF by over 150 artists,, Elaine Balsley, and her husband Cap who was also an invited guest  The artists represent various Societies of Illusrators and independent professional artists across the nation. The USAF Art Program began in 1950 with the transfer of some 800 works of art documenting the early days of the Army Air Corps. In the early 1950s, the Air Force sponsored tours of its installations for cartoonists, artists and illustrators, successfully capturing and recording the Air Force story through the medium of art. The program continues to function as it did 58 years ago. The Pentagon is the largest showcase for the art, but paintings are spread around the globe at every Air Force base.
Elaine Balsley is a contractor working for SAIC on location at HQ AFMC/A4MW at Wright-Patt. As an independent professional artist, I donated a painting of a Seversky P-35 that I did from a photo I took at the National Museum of the USAF. There were 330 people at the AF Art Program dinner (150 artists and their guests), and a little over 200 paintings on display. In addition to my contribution, this exhibit featured paintings donated by artists who traveled to document the Air Force's mission throughout the world to include operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, artists have documented the Predator, FA-22, F-35 and space operations. Not only do these trips inspire the artists (who are all considered to be “official AF approved artists”) to come home and create paintings, some illustrate on-location. After the dinner, the donated artwork was officially turned over to the USAF, and was accepted by SAF/AAZ, William A. Davidson and General William M. Fraser III, Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force. The AF Art Program accepts donated paintings at an official presentation dinner every two years.
The donated paintings are scanned individually and posted on the USAF Art Collection website, which is a time-consuming process, so some paintings may not have yet been posted. The photographs were taken between September 1945 and July 1946. The exhibit is comprised of 21 framed photographs and 6 unmounted prints. November-December 2008

Julie RIcketts will be displaying 6-8 large watercolor pieces at "The Candle Lab" in downtown Worthington (behind Graeter's) from Nov. 24 until the end of December. These will include several florals and several "architectural" pieces from German VIllage.

Sherry Mullett has been juried into the Ohio Art League Fall Exhibit.

Ann Kramer has had a painting judged into the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society “Best of America Exhibit 2008”, whose show runs through Nov. 21. Carolee Brown has 30 watercolor paintings on display at the Worthington United Methodist Church (885-5365) until Dec. 5th.  The church is located at 600 High St., open M - F 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.  The exhibit is located in the hallway gallery by the office (rear left entrance) and in the nearby Dixon Lounge.

A digital presentation entitled, “ FUJI SMILED ON ME” will be given at The Marysville Library at 3 PM on Saturday October 4th by Bill Westerman, who has traveled numerous times to Japan. There will also be a month long exhibit of his photographs and paintings in the library during October 2008

Seeking entries for the annual all media juried, regional art exhibition held in conjunction with the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association's annual Midwest Veterinary Conference (MVC). The MVC is the 5th largest veterinary conference in North America drawing over 6,000 attendees from more than 40 states. Accepted pieces compete for three awards offering cash prizes: Best of Show $300, President's Choice $100 and People's Choice $100. Selected members of Ohio art associations will participate as jurors for the 2009 exhibit selection.

Front page, This Week Licking County Licking County resident Gary Chaconas takes advantage of the nice weather Wednesday, May 21, to paint with oils along the banks of Big Walnut Creek in Galena . Chaconas said he is a member of a group that goes to various locations to paint "en Plein air," which means "In open air."

The city of Delaware is inviting artists to paint the Central Ohio Symphony in action. 2009 is their 30th anniversary and a May exhibition of other types of art is being planned now. Artists are invited to watch a performance. Or visit during a rehearsal and sit with the orchestra, photograph or create an onsite master piece while listening to them play. The interpretation of the music, musicians, or instruments are totally up to the artist. Please contact Warren Hyer before showing up for a rehearsal. Attached is the winter schedule. Scenes from the July 19th Dublin Art Show, WAAL was invited to participate. Thanks to Dennis Zimmerman for coordinating with our membership and the Dublin Art League. We especially want to thank all the artists who participated and those who made it possible for us to set up, man the tent and do the take down. Our new banner was featured on the front of the tent to tell all the world we were there. We had about 25 artists represented with paintings, photographs, prints, cards and jewelry. There were some significant sales, and Katie Fowle was doing a great job of keeping track of the purchase records. Some of our members also had their own booths. Jim Glover, Janet Waggoner, Bob Tanner , Vivian Ripley, and Kevin Willis took on the big effort of having a booth with all the work that is involved in setting up a solo effort.
The tent was huge and we had a length of racks right down the middle with paintings hanging on both sides. Along the edges of the tent were tables and racks with additional art. The weather was just a tad on the warm side but we all had a great time.

Rhonda Bartoe Tucker 1. My colored pencil drawing, “Short North Arches” was selected for the cover art of the Short North Visitors Guide. 60,000 copies were printed and are being distributed at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the Columbus airport, area hotels, and area shops and galleries.
2. I have been invited to teach with Ann Kullberg and Gemma Gyling on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera. I will be teaching a class on colored pencil drawing on layers of mylar. The cruise takes place November 2-9, 2008. More information at http://www.annkullberg.com/cruise_home.php

Linda Wesner will receive Signature Membership in Graphics, Hudson Valley Art Association, at their annual exhibit and award ceremony at the Old Lyme Art Association, Lyme, Ct on June 27.  One of her colored pencil drawings was also accepted for this year's show. Several members of WAAL were featured in a show of the work of Ohio Plein Air Society at the Springfield Art Museum. Carmen Nestor, Rich Clem, Karen LaValley, Jim Glover, Bob Tanner, and Mary Holobaugh each had a couple of their most recent paintings in this show which opened this past week with an artist’s reception on Saturday November 3. It’s a short drive over to Springfield and worth the time to see these paintings exhibited in this wonderfully lit and displayed venue. Congratulations to all the folks who were juried into this show. 116 painting were entered only  65 were juried in for the exhibit.
