GOT ART
If your walls are bare, if there is room to spare, you need art! If your homes
not done, just for fun, you need art! Get it April 26 at the SUNBURY UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH ART FAIR. This is an excellent opportunity for the novice or
serious art collector to begin or add to an existing art collection. From 9
a.m.-4 p.m. the church will be packed with artists in watercolors, oils,
pastels, and multi-media (sculpture, glass, photography) competing for awards
and offering art lovers an opportunity to view and purchase original works of
art. This is a juried art event designed to attract retail business to the
Sunbury area. It is an indoor show, held just prior to the start of the outdoor
art season. Proceeds will benefit the needy both locally and internationally.
The church is located at the intersection of Routes 3 and 36/37 and as such is a
gateway to the Sunbury Square shopping area. The organizers hope to make this
exciting art event an annual affair. This will add another Sunbury event to the
existing Farmers Market and summer holiday antique and flea markets,
highlighting Sunbury as the place to shop for the unique and unusual.
Sponsorships are available to underwrite the event and provide awards to the
artists; large cash awards will attract more quality artists each year, as the
event becomes well known. Area business are being asked to support the event
with $50, $100, and $200 sponsorships; the sponsorship may also be designated as
an award in any of the featured art categories of oils and acrylics, watercolor,
or multimedia, or Best Of Show. Sponsorships by individuals, groups or
businesses will receive recognition at the show. We look forwarded to seeing you
at the Art Fair and the lunch April 26, 2008.

reception
5.19 6-7:30pm This juried exhibition brings together the talented
artists
living in the Greater Columbus Area. Work from the community art leagues
of
Delaware, Dublin, Upper Arlington and Worthington will be on view in the
City of Upper Arlington's Concourse Gallery.
Work is to be delivered from 8-7pm May 12 and will be juried here in the
gallery on May 13 in the morning. Artists would be notified on May 13 in
the afternoon. We have enough wall space to include 12 2-d pieces per
art
league and 12 pedestals to accommodate 3-4 pieces per art league. I'd
suggest, depending on the size of the league, having members bring not
more
than two pieces each for jurying. We'll have contracts for the show
between
the City of UA and the individual art leagues.
As to publicity, we'll do postcards from here and can put your logo on
the
card. We use hot cards and print 5000, our mailing list is about 2600,
we
can take labels of your mailing lists depending on how many, let me
know.
We'll also put this on our website and do press releases. Do you each
want
to do your own press releases in your community?

Theres no space like home
Collectors convert residence into gallery
By Bill Mayr FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Two
Columbus art aficionados have taken a giant step beyond
displaying beloved artworks in their living room.
Theyve turned their spacious Downtown home into an art
gallery.
The Lyle Gallery of Tim Knapp and Damon Dalrymple is in an
elegant, imposing house on a leafy stretch of E. Town Street.
Large, bright plein-air and studio paintings by Karen
LaValley of Westerville fill the living room. Dozens of them are
found there, in hallways and in another room on a floor below.
Thats not all: The two men intend to have outdoor-sculpture
exhibits and develop a carriage house into a space for visiting
artists to live and work.
They bought the house in the fall with an eye toward a
gallery.
"We walked in the door and said this was perfect," Dalrymple
recalled. "The idea is you view the art in the setting of a
home, which we think is a more natural setting." Their idea
isnt far-fetched: Veteran art dealers Jim and Tim Keny have
long used a German Village cottage as their gallery. In their
case, Knapp and Dalrymple live in the three-story,
4,400-square-foot house, including the living-room gallery. "We
live everywhere," Knapp said. They arent newcomers to art,
having bought pieces for themselves for years. "Ive been a
dealer for 16 years, at least, with paintings, glass, pottery,
furniture," Knapp said. "Ive worked with galleries, stores,
buying and selling. "I wanted to do something on my own; I
wanted to represent artists who didnt have representation."
The gallery is named for Knapps grandfather, Lyle Trego, of
the Chillicothe area.
Knapp, 42, is a case manager with the Franklin County Board
of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. Dalrymple,
40, is a chemist for Abitec, a specialty food-ingredient and
chemical producer, and a co-owner of the Studio 35 theater.
LaValley gives the gallery two thumbs up.
Theres a "great demand" by artists for venues to display
their art, she said.
"I think Tim and Damon are every artists dream. They have
very astute powers of observation about art; they are very
understanding of it."
Ruth Lantz who owned the house for about 17 years with her
husband, Bill also likes the gallery plan. She is a cofounder
of Studios on High, a co-op gallery in the Short North.
"Thats what I have tried to do in the Short North for years
and years: introduce people to art," she said. "Im all for it.
"Its a great neighborhood, a beautiful strip of the city.
Its a great use of the house."
The site is zoned for mixed use, Knapp and Dalrymple said.
Lantz called the structure, built in the second half of the
1800s, "the only French Second Empire (house) in the city."
Plans include monthly exhibits and receptions for artists and
visitors. Other viewing times are by appointment, with a goal of
establishing fixed hours.
Knapp and Dalrymple hope to renovate the carriage house and
open it next year to free three-month residencies for artists
and musicians.
In keeping with the home-style approach, artists who exhibit
their works agree to provide one other thing, Dalrymple said:
"A painting for our personal collection."

Artists and Watermedia Enthusiasts, The Ohio
Watercolor Society is sponsoring a program at the Middletown Fine Art Center
featuring Warren Taylor. The program will be from 2-4 PM, Sunday, July15, 2007.
Warren Taylor is this year's juror and workshop presenter for the Ohio
Watercolor Society's annual exhibition. He's an instructor at Midland College in
Texas and conducts classes in drawing, painting, watercolor and art history. His
works have been included in both AWS and NWS juried exhibitions and are part of
many private collections. His approach to watercolor is one of spontaneity and
freshness. His compositions combine disparate objects such as children's toys
and flower pots with imaginative landscapes. In teaching, he guides his students
to a more spontaneous approach to watercolor, encouraging them to look at
familiar objects and methods in a fresh, exciting manner. Warren will give a
slide program and a short demonstration. The program is free and will be held at
the Middletown Fine Arts Center on Verity Parkway in Middletown. 513-424-2417.
There are still spaces available in his workshop at Middletown July 16-20.
Sharon Stolzenberger, OWS Chairperson, Watercolor Ohio 2007
Karen LaValley will be painting in the Door county
Wisconsin Plein Air painting competition also later on this month.
Wren House has been a great seller of the
calendars and note cards. I just collected another (small) check from them last
week, they keep going. They wanted me to let the league know about the framed
picture they made. They used the 2005 calendar and cut a mat with openings for
each of the 12 pictures. It was done by Culver's and is computerized. If anyone
wants a mat for the old calendar, it would be easy to make one. And old
calendars are still available. They are selling the framed pic for $115 and have
it hanging at the Wren House. Ruth Smilan
Jim Glover and Bill

Annual watercolor contest
Weiss, Yemc garden featured

By Ann Tormet/ThisWeek
Janet Waggoner of Westerville holds her painting, which won the
German Village Society outstanding watercolor award. Members of
the Central Ohio Watercolor Society took part in the painting
competition. The award was presented at the German Village
Meeting Haus Sunday.
Westerville artist Janet Waggoner won the German Village
Society's annual watercolor contest on Sunday. She will be paid
$500 for her painting of Amy Weiss's and Michael Yemc's garden
at their Lear Street home.
Theirs was one of the properties featured in last weekend's Haus
und Garten Tour, and is one of a cluster of newer homes built on
a former factory site, melding a historic look with modern
conveniences.
"The backyards themselves are gorgeous; they are like little
rooms themselves," said Waggoner. That was one reason she chose
to paint the Weiss/Yemc garden, rather than the front of the
house. The other reason was one of practicality.
"There was a threat of rain and watercolors do not do well in
rain," she said. "They had a table set up and a big umbrella;
that seemed like the best place to be."
"I mainly had to choose a view ... and chose one for the colors
- the flowers were just beautiful," she said. "They have a paper
birch, which has wonderful texture. And I showed a bit of the
house since the brick work is indicative of German Village."
This year's contest was the third for Waggoner.
"It's the first I've won; I got third place last year," she
said. "It's quite an honor."
Waggoner won a blue ribbon and will be paid $500 for her
painting, which the GVS will reproduce and use in promotional
materials this year.
Originally from Lorain, Waggoner has been a watercolor artist
for 35 years; she specializes in house portraits and teaches
small-group watercolor classes.
Her paintings have been used on greeting cards, including some
honoring members of the military, and for "Kathy's Care Cards,"
which were developed by a Westerville nurse to support women
with breast cancer.
"That's a really great thing she is doing," said Waggoner. "Four
years ago, she was running in the Race for the Cure, and she
wanted to get cards for the friends who she was running for. But
nothing seemed just right, so she created her own."
Waggoner was chosen by the Ohio Bicentennial Commission to
painted pictures of 39 of the county barns that were decorated
for the 2003 Ohio bicentennial, and one year painted a portrait
of the Ohio Statehouse for the governor's staff Christmas card.
She recently participated in the Worthington Arts Festival, and
will display her work in the Westerville Art Show July 14-15 in
Heritage Park.
She is married to John Waggoner, and the couple has three
children and two grandchildren.
The watercolor contest has been around for about 30 years, said
GVS executive director Katharine Moore. Each year, members of
the Central Ohio Watercolor Society are chosen to paint the
homes and gardens featured in the tour. They arrive early on
tour day and names are drawn to decide who will paint each
house. Then the artists set up shop and paint during the day as
tour visitors come and go.
Moore said the watercolor contest adds a special something to
tour day.
"The people going through the tour really like it," she said.
"They talk to the artists and it gives them something to do
while they are waiting in line.
" ... It's also interesting to see what people capture," she
said. "Sometimes they do a doorknob or a roof."
The top four places are honored. Besides Waggoner, this year's
winners are:
Jerri Ellis Platt, second place (Founders' Award), chosen by
George Schmidt.
Judy Dillon Smith, third place, chosen by Jim and Jan Barnes.
German Village resident Carol Schar, fourth place, chosen by Ned
and Josie Merkle.
All three receive a $300 prize.

Kaite Fowle, I have 20 of my
pieces, all of which have been in one show or another, at the Church of the

interested in viewing the art work, he or she can call the church. They are
located on State Street, just north of Gallery 202, on the West side of the
street. The church has a couple, Mary and Bill Saltz, who are the curators of
monthly art presentations. Mine will be hanging in May and maybe part of June.

Soy Bean Fields
Forever by Richard Clem
Maybe Soy Bean Fields
Forever isnt as catchy as the Beatles Strawberry
Fields Forever, but Richard Clems painting does full
justice to the humble Midwestern bean.
His painting,
ablaze with the orange and rust colors of fall, along
with more of his central-Ohio landscapes, are on view
Downtown in the Vorys Gallery of the Jefferson Center

Miller Paul also contains a soybean field.
"I got enamored
with soybean fields. The light was just hitting them
so," Clem said.
"I look for
something in the landscape that talks to me. Something
always strikes you when you are out there.
"And then its: Can
I capture it? "
Clem works with
colors and textures, using painterly techniques to put
his stamp on a scene.
"Instead of
creating just a picture, I want to create a work of
art."

Rachel Crumby and Katie
Fowle were talking about how tiny each of their home "studios" are,
and how creating art is not quite as much as it used to be because of it.
Rachel's personal studio space consists of a four- by- four foot spot in the
corner of my dark, dingy basement which is a bit uninspiring to say the least.
This brings us to our point. It occurred to us that there are probably other
WAAL members who also lack good studio space which got me thinking about a
solution. We thought it could be great fun to start a co-op of sorts, and
together, lease a great space, in-town, to use as a joint studio space. Not only
would it allow us each a large, bright, dedicated space to create art, but we
would be able to keep each other company while working! Who knows, we may even
learn from each other. For the past two weeks now I have been searching for a
space that would make an ideal studio and I believe I have finally found it! It
is located on High Street just south of Starbucks in a brick office building on
the east side of the street. It is approx. 740 sq ft with its own private
lobby/sitting room, two offices, one large, one medium size, a large storage
closet and a kitchen. It has even been recently renovated! It is so nice, I do
not expect it to remain available very long so if you are at all interested in
being a part of this group, please call me ASAP. I will fill you in on all the
details and try to answer all your questions. I can be reached at 844-6732
almost anytime and am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
"To all art league members: If you
are the chair of a WAAL show, and want to have it advertised in the
paper, please send the following information to me one month before the
opening of the show: Name of show, location, type of art, beginning and
ending date of show and times. Thanks, Donna McCauley" quilter2468@hotmail.com

abstract paintings are filled with
explosive kinetic energy.
Burgyans works
have made their way into the
White House collection and the
Museum of Women in the Arts in
Washington.
Her bronzes,
celebrating the human form
in motion, are filled with
grace and an uplifting
quality.
Universal
Merkaba Variation I and
II feature human
pyramids, with bodies
contorting and balancing
precariously in
whimsical poses.
Resembling a circus act
or the tableaux of the
dance company Pilobolus,
the bronzes seem to soar
with grace.
Fruit
of the Vine is a
figure formed from a
gnarled vine ripe
and bursting with
fruit. The knotted
bark morphs into a
dancing figure
balancing on one
leg, while leaves
and grapes adorn the
entire body. As
subtle green patina
on the leaves and a
purplish tint on the
grapes add nice
detail. The joyful
work should draw
smiles.
Leemans

The most-literal works in Leemans collection are four abstractions in the "Vermont" series, which draws its inspiration from nature. Their loose brushwork and freer use of paint and space offer a nice contrast to the "Kandinsky" series.
Through abstraction and motion, these two artists search for an aesthetic language to call their own.

event where people are looking for inexpensive items like note cards and small

In 1999, for my senior design
thesis, I wrote and illustrated a children's book, "A Trip to
New York". It is the story of a trip my father and I took to New
York City when I was only 4-and-a-half years old and what
excitement I felt upon seeing the Statue of Liberty for the
first time. The illustrations are all collages which were
photographed for printing.
This October at the High Road Gallery in Worthington, the
original collage illustrations will be on view in a group show
titled "Touching the Heart, Illustrators of Books".
An opening reception will be held on Sunday, October 1 from 2-4
pm. Small versions of the book will be available for purchase. I
will be there and I hope to see you there as well.

On Saturday August 12 a group of
artists from Worthington Area Art League set up their easels on
the Village Green and painted different vistas Katie Fowle chose
to paint the Farmers Market crowd including the flowers and
produce plus folks buying the same. Bob Coe chose to paint the
old rectory at the Presbyterian Church, Bill Westerman fixed his
gaze on the steeple of the same Church in an attempt to portray
the play of morning light, Christiane Curry stopped by to greet
all the painters on the green, Rich Clem and Chuck Zelms
stationed themselves in front of the Old Library Building. Rich
painted the Presbyterian Church from that vantage point and
Chuck painted the Episcopal Church. New member Joan Zeller set up her
easel along side 161 just east of High Street and painted the
colors and shadows of the Episcopal Church. The weather was
ideal, cool temperature, great sunlight and shadows and the
artists all had a great time.If you missed this opportunity to
paint plein air you will have more opportunities in the near
future.

I wanted to give the members a heads up to not forget the
miniatures show "It's a Small World" in November at the High Road Gallery!! I
will be preparing and emailing (via you, I guess) the entry form very soon. The
show's take in date is Monday October 30 at 6-8 pm and cost is $15, as ever. The
reception is November 5 from 2-4. I especially wanted to remind everyone who is
interested that you are allowed up to 4 pieces (2-D). The finished framed art is
not to exceed 8x10 inches, but it can be very, very small! No multiples in 1
frame either, unless the frame is 8x10 or less. The art work can be 8x10 if
using canvas that can be painted on the sides. There are no other rules
concerning the art work, since we are entering as the Worthington Area Art
League. The Columbus Miniature Society has its own rules for their work, but we
are exempt from them. If anyone has any questions, he/she may email me at
fowlesnest@sbcglobal.net or call me at 614.431.3506 or 614.476.8108 (work) or my
cell 614.270.8408. You will probably have to leave a message on the cell since I
am hard of hearing and miss the cell's ring! Rachel Crumpley is my co-chair, and
her number is 614.844.6732. This is not a juried show, but there will be 2
people's choices, one for each group. I am excited about the show because
miniature works are probably a new venue for many of our members. I think it
would be a great challenge for us to try doing art on a small scale. Please
email me or call me ASAP if you are planning to be in the show!!! Thanks!!

The Worthington Area Art League has purchased one of the art persons to benefit
the Arts Center. Members will be decorating it with the WAAL calendars. Besides
the money spent going to the charity fund, the "art person" can be used to
promote other projects throughout the year; (e.g., red tie gala).
Dear WAAL Members,
The 2006 Holiday Fundraiser Committee is making progress on the planning aspects
of the Year End event planned for December 1 – 9, 2006 at the High Road
Gallery. This event is designed to raise money for the Peggy R. McConnell Arts
Center of Worthington (formerly presented as the Arts Center of Worthington).
This exhibit kicks off with a gala Red Tie opening to be held the evening of
Friday, December 1, 2006. Members of the community, patrons of the arts, and art
league members will be invited to participate in this very special opening.
Admission to this special opening will be via tickets purchased in advance or at
the door. Starting on Saturday, December 2, the exhibit will be open to the
general public (no ticket required) with additional art work available for sale.
The Gala opening and subsequent public exhibit will present fine art and
exquisite crafts produced by WAAL members and invited guest artists. It is
envisioned that a portion the 30% sales commission in addition to proceeds from
the sale of admission tickets, will go to the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center.
At this point the committee is in the process of selecting artists and their art
for the Gala event and subsequent public exhibit. While it might seem a bit
early, it is imperativ
