J. Robert Reed, one of our artists entered a contest with some of his art. He sent the following for us. Note there is an attachment of a picture of his art. Here's an extract from the Korean Embassy Web site that I entered their art contest earlier as follows:Hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea(Washington, D.C. July 1, 2011) – The Korean Cultural Center at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea is proud to announce the 2011 Taekwondo Essay & Art Contest, a nationwide search for exceptional writing and artwork that capture the unique personal experiences and spirit of Taekwondo, Korea’s own martial art. Now in its third year, the essay contest has been a key embassy program for promoting and reaffirming the special bond between the United States and the Republic of Korea by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds with a common passion. This year, the program has expanded its scope to include a visual art contest category. This complete guide and application form for submissions can be downloaded from www.Dynamic-Korea.com.

"Where did our summer go?" If you are like me, you've probably said that several times in the last week! Like it or not, kids (grandkids?) are back in school, pools are closing, and the weather patterns will soon shift to autumnal rhythms. But, hey! Instead, let's CELEBRATE OUR SUMMER! on September 21 at 7 p.m. at the McConnell Arts Center. WAAL's first meeting of the year has become a traditional time to bring along our memories of the summer in the form of a painting, a photograph, a sculpture--whatever brings to mind a highlight from your vacation, no matter the form. Any member who is willing can share their creation and it's story--without critiquing or comments from other members. Sort of an "Open Mic for Art!"

So get busy preparing or "stirring to the top" that special something that speaks to you of the Summer of 2011. We should have a great time reliving our own story and hearing everyone else share theirs. See you the 21st at 7 p.m. at the MAC (McConnell Arts Center) at 777 Evening Street in Worthington!

There was a crowd of 80 plus at the annual WAAL Spring Potluck Dinner.

Our new President Jim Glover, Vice President Ron Porta and Secretary Sara Worthington were introduced at the beginning of the festivities. Continuing on as our Treasurer will be Ana Maria Atwood who is in Chilie visiting with her mother.

Honored Guests of the evening were the recipients of our Student Awards, Kyle Lamb from Thomas Worthington High School and Daniel Hilty from Worthington Kilbourne High School, along with their teachers Melinda Rosenberg and Julie Woodrow and the students parents. The students were presented with their awards of $600 each by Ron Porta and then they discussed their art and displayed examples of some of their works.

Our Guest Speaker Ron Anderson from CCAD gave a slide show and comments about his career and examples of some of his art. His art is in the collection of the Ohio Supreme Court here in Columbus.

The art league thanks those who worked behind the scenes to make this dinner a success including Bonnie Smith, Carol Fiorella, Mike Tizzano, Vi Hendershot, Jila Davoodi, Bob Davitian, Tom Conrad, and Bill Westerman.

We certainly are appreciative of the cooperation of Andy Heron, Jon Cook, and the staff of the McConnell Art Center in making available the Main Gallery space at the MAC for the dinner.
