Artist: Stephanie Atwood

Stephanie Atwood is a visual artist and photographer. Atwood grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where she lived for 18 years before moving to Chicago. She graduated from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in May of 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography & Studio. She received  The Bachelor of Fine Arts Fellowship from this school.

Atwood takes the time to process and develop her own work. She works with 4x5, 120 and 35mm Black&White films. All of her black & white works are developed, scanned and printed by herself. Originally she processed her prints in the darkroom, but has also begun to take advantage of recent advances in digital printing. Atwood achieves the desired effect of her photographs using the sharp feel of negatives combined with Photoshop manipulation.

The focus of Atwood's work is to capture the essence of worldy struggles, her own and those of others, in two-dimensional imagery. Although grim her work may sometimes seem, its purpose is to expose the beauty in places where most wouldn't expect to find it.
